Instagram Reels Size and Length: 2026 Spec Sheet
Table of Contents

The ideal Instagram Reel is 1080 x 1920 pixels in a 9:16 vertical frame, exported as an MP4 or MOV, and can run up to 3 minutes. Instagram does accept other shapes, but anything that is not 9:16 gets letterboxed or cropped, which wastes screen space and weakens the first seconds that decide whether anyone keeps watching.

This is the spec sheet to export from, plus the parts nobody lists: where captions and faces must sit, how the cover is cropped on your profile, and which length actually works for reach.

Instagram Reels Specs at a Glance

Spec Recommended Notes
Dimensions 1080 x 1920 px Higher resolution is downscaled
Aspect ratio 9:16 vertical Square and landscape are letterboxed
Max length Up to 3 minutes Shorter usually performs better
File type MP4 or MOV H.264 video, AAC audio
Frame rate 30 fps 24 to 60 fps accepted
Cover image 1080 x 1920 px Grid crops it, see below
Caption Keep key words early Long captions are truncated

Exact limits such as maximum file size change between app versions and device types, so confirm the current number in Instagram's help center before you compress for upload. The values in the table are the ones that have stayed stable.

Reels Length: What Works in 2026

Instagram lets Reels run to 3 minutes, so length is no longer the constraint. Retention is. The shorter your Reel, the easier it is for viewers to finish it or replay it, and finishing and replaying are the signals that earn wider distribution.

Goal Length that fits
Reach to new people 7 to 20 seconds
Tutorial or tip list 20 to 45 seconds
Story or case study 45 to 90 seconds
Deep explainer to people who already follow you 90 seconds to 3 minutes

Treat these as starting ranges, not rules. The only number that matters is the average watch time in your own insights, covered in our guide to checking Reels insights. If viewers drop at second 6 in a 30-second Reel, the Reel is too long for its hook, not too short.

Also note that Instagram's recommendation system has become more open to longer Reels in the Reels tab, but it still favors content people finish. A 3-minute Reel that holds attention can work. A 3-minute Reel with a slow start will not.

Safe Zones: Keep Text and Faces Out of the Danger Areas

The Instagram interface covers parts of your frame. Anything important in those areas can be hidden by the username, caption, audio label, or the buttons on the right.

  • Top: keep about 14% of the height (roughly 270 px of 1920) clear of key text.
  • Bottom: keep about 20% (roughly 380 px) clear, because the caption, audio name and progress bar sit there.
  • Right edge: keep about 100 px clear of text, because the like, comment, share and save buttons sit on it.
  • Faces and the main subject: center them in the middle of the frame.

A reliable method: export one frame, place a 15% band on the top and a 20% band on the bottom in your editor, and check that no text touches them. Then export.

Cover Image and the Profile Grid Crop

The profile grid now shows a taller crop than the old square, so a cover designed for a square tile will cut off.

  1. Design the cover at 1080 x 1920. This keeps the full-screen Reel intact.
  2. Keep the title and face in the center third. The grid shows a center crop of your cover.
  3. Use one large word or number. Small text is unreadable at grid size.
  4. Keep covers consistent. The same font and color scheme across covers makes the grid look like a brand, not a pile of random clips.

You can choose any frame or upload a custom cover when you publish.

File Format and Quality: What to Export

  • Container: MP4 is the safest choice. MOV from an iPhone is also fine.
  • Video codec: H.264 is universal. HEVC from phones usually works, but H.264 avoids upload and playback issues.
  • Bitrate: moderate. Very high bitrates do not look better after Instagram recompresses your video, and they upload slower.
  • Audio: AAC. Normalize levels so speech is clearly louder than music. Many people watch on speakers or with low volume.
  • Subtitles: burn in captions or use Instagram's caption sticker. Most Reels are watched with sound off at some point.

Common Reels Mistakes That Hurt Reach

  1. Uploading horizontal video. You get thin strips and a tiny subject. Re-frame for 9:16 instead of letterboxing.
  2. Visible watermarks from other apps. Instagram deprioritizes recycled content, as covered in our algorithm changes breakdown. Export without a watermark. Our guide to reposting between platforms explains the safe way.
  3. Putting text where the interface sits. If viewers cannot read your hook, they do not stay.
  4. Slow intros. The first 3 seconds decide it. See the five hook types.
  5. Ignoring the cover. An off-center cover looks careless on the grid.
  6. Posting without a plan. Timing matters less than quality but still helps, as in best time to post on Instagram.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best size for Instagram Reels?

1080 x 1920 pixels at a 9:16 vertical aspect ratio. Instagram accepts other ratios but letterboxes or crops them, so 9:16 gives you full-screen presentation.

How long can an Instagram Reel be in 2026?

Up to 3 minutes. Shorter Reels are usually easier to finish and replay, which helps distribution, so use the length your idea needs and no more.

What file format should I use for Reels?

MP4 or MOV, with H.264 video and AAC audio, at about 30 frames per second. MP4 is the safest option.

What is the Reels safe zone?

Keep key text and faces away from roughly the top 14% and bottom 20% of the frame, and about 100 pixels from the right edge, because the interface covers those areas.

What size should a Reels cover be?

Design it at 1080 x 1920 and keep the main text and face in the center, because the profile grid shows a taller center crop rather than the full frame.

Does a higher resolution improve Reel quality?

Not meaningfully. Instagram recompresses uploads, so 1080 x 1920 with clean lighting and clear audio looks as good as a larger export and uploads faster.
