A WhatsApp Channel is a one-way broadcast feed that a brand publishes to followers who opt in, without either side ever seeing the other's phone number. It lives in the Updates tab, separate from private chats, and it has no fixed cap on followers. For an Indian brand that wants to reach customers on WhatsApp without building a contact list first, it is the lowest-friction way in.
Channels are often confused with broadcast lists and with the WhatsApp Business API, which are different tools with different rules. This guide explains all three, when each one fits, and how to run a Channel so people do not mute it.
What a WhatsApp Channel Is
A Channel works more like following a page than messaging a contact. A brand creates it, shares a link or QR code, and people tap Follow. From then on, whatever the admin posts appears in the follower's Updates tab.
The features that define it:
- One-way by design. Followers can react to updates but cannot reply into the channel. There is no group chat, and no follower can message the rest.
- Phone numbers stay private. The admin does not see followers' numbers, and followers do not see each other's. Admins see aggregate numbers, not a contact list.
- Discoverable. Channels can be found through the directory in the Updates tab, and you can also promote yours through a link on your website, packaging, Instagram bio, or email signature.
- Rich formats. Text, photos, videos, links, stickers, and polls all work.
- Updates are not permanent. WhatsApp keeps channel updates for a limited period by default, so a Channel works for timely content rather than as an archive.
WhatsApp has also added paid features on top of this since 2025, such as promoted channels and subscriptions, and availability differs by country. Check which ones your account can actually use before building a plan around them.
Channels vs. Broadcast Lists vs. the Business API
Most confusion comes from treating these three as one thing.
| Channel | Broadcast list | Business API | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who receives | Anyone who follows | Only contacts who saved your number | Contacts who opted in |
| Delivered as | An update in the Updates tab | A normal chat message | A chat message, often from a template |
| Reply possible | No | Yes, privately to you | Yes, two-way |
| Phone numbers | Hidden both ways | You need them saved | You hold them |
| Cost | Free | Free | Paid per conversation or message |
| Best for | Public updates, reach | Small warm audiences | Transactions, support, reminders |
A broadcast list feels intimate because messages arrive as ordinary chats, but it only reaches people who have already saved your number, and it has a hard size limit per list. That makes it fine for a small shop with a warm customer base and a poor fit for growth.
The Business API is the tool for anything transactional: order confirmations, appointment reminders, delivery updates, support triage. It costs money and needs opt-in, but it is the only one of the three built for two-way, automated conversations. Mehran Shahmiri covers the trust rules that make it work in more detail in his post on WhatsApp for Indian small businesses.
A Channel sits in a different place: it is a publishing tool, not a messaging tool. Use it to reach people you have not yet collected contact details from.
When a Channel Is the Right Choice
Channels fit brands with something worth following. The pattern is consistent:
Recurring, timely content. Sale alerts, new arrivals, event dates, match-day updates, exam-result dates, price changes. Anything where "now" matters more than "later."
Brands without a customer list. If you have never captured phone numbers, a Channel lets people opt in with one tap, with no form and no data collection to manage.
Creators and media-style brands. A Channel works as a low-effort distribution layer for a creator who already posts on Instagram or YouTube, since followers get updates in an app they open every day. Our guide on community management in 2026 covers how to think about owned audiences versus rented ones.
Social commerce. A Channel is a natural place to drop product launches and limited stock alerts, which pairs well with the shift covered in live shopping and social commerce.
A Channel is the wrong tool when you need to talk to a customer, not at them. Order support, quotes, and complaints belong in a normal chat or the Business API.
How to Run One Without Getting Muted
WhatsApp is a personal inbox, and people are protective of it. A few habits keep a Channel welcome:
- Post on a schedule people can predict. Two or three updates a week beats five in one day and silence for a month. Our content calendar guide works for this as well as for any other platform.
- Lead with the point. Updates show as short previews. The first line should say what the update is and why it matters.
- Use polls to learn. Polls are the one interactive element, so they double as low-cost market research.
- Do not repurpose Instagram captions unchanged. WhatsApp readers expect shorter, plainer updates. See our advice on writing social media captions and adjust the tone.
- Point to it from everywhere you already have attention. Put the follow link in your Instagram bio, on your website, in receipts, and on packaging. Instagram has also been testing ways to share Stories to WhatsApp Status, according to reports on its August 2026 updates, so the two platforms are getting closer over time.

What to Measure
A Channel gives you fewer numbers than a list would, which is the price of privacy. Track follower growth, views per update, reactions, and poll responses over time. Compare them against your other channels using the approach in our guide to social media ROI, and judge a Channel by whether views per update hold steady as followers grow. If they fall, you are posting too often or the content is not earning its place.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a WhatsApp Channel?
A one-way broadcast feed that a brand or creator publishes to followers who opt in. Updates appear in the Updates tab, and neither the admin nor the followers see each other's phone numbers.
How is a Channel different from a broadcast list?
A broadcast list sends a normal chat message, and only to contacts who saved your number. A Channel publishes to anyone who follows it, with no number needed on either side, and followers cannot reply.
Is a WhatsApp Channel free?
Creating and running a basic Channel is free. WhatsApp has added paid options such as promoted channels and subscriptions, and availability varies by country.
Can I send order updates or reminders through a Channel?
No. A Channel is for public updates to all followers. Order confirmations, reminders, and support belong in normal chats or the WhatsApp Business API.
Can followers reply to a Channel?
They can react to updates and answer polls, but they cannot send messages into the Channel or to other followers.
